Ecclestone suggests only one reason behind Wheatley Audi exit ‘makes sense’

A few days ago, the German outfit announced the departure of former Red Bull sporting director, who had left Milton Keynes to become team principal in 2024, citing personal reasons behind the split.

Speaking in an interview with Blick, Ecclestone expressed his doubts over the news, pointing to what he believes is the only reason such a move would make sense.

"That's actually impossible. It would only make sense if he doesn't like it in Switzerland and wants to go back to England," he said.

Speculation has ramped up in recent days over a possible move to Aston Martin for Wheatley, with the Brit widely linked to a team principal role that would allow Newey to focus exclusively on technical matters.

Amid the growing rumours, the Canadian businessman moved to clarify the situation himself, stressing that the current narrative surrounding Newey’s role does not reflect reality. He underlined that Newey remains a central figure within the organisation, describing him as both a key shareholder and a trusted partner.

He also reiterated that Newey serves as Managing Technical Partner at Aston Martin, highlighting the strong working relationship between the two and their shared long-term vision for success within the team.
