In Formula 1, there's often talk of a so-called British bias. Lando Norris, after his crash with teammate Oscar Piastri in Canada, received no penalty points. This reignited the discussion on British bias. Dutch Ziggo Sport analysts render their verdict on this. Richard Verschoor, a Formula 2 driver for the Dutch MP Motorsport team, believes that the penalties from driver to driver are not that different. "I thus think that it's not so bad," the Dutchman began at the Ziggo Sport Race Café.
Was there British bias in Canada?
"I think that it's always a bit exaggerated that the British get off more easily than others. I thus believe that it's actually not the case at all. The stewards simply look at each incident independently and I think nobody is favored," concludes Verschoor.
Former Red Bull Racing driver Robert Doornbos shares this opinion. He admits that the penalties sometimes vary but can also explain this. "Look, they need to customize their response and you can't make every penalty the same, because the situation is always just a bit different."
A comparison between the penalty of Lando Norris and previous penalties of, for example, Max Verstappen, therefore cannot be made. "So you actually can't compare them," stated Doornbos.
"The penalty points that Max has, those are all points that he has picked up before. You can't do anything about that now," the Dutchman concluded.
The Dutch Ziggo Sport analysts thus declare that there was no British bias in Canada. Additionally, no British steward was present during the weekend in Montréal.
Former team boss Guenther Steiner also agrees with the view of the Dutch analysts.
