Circuit Barcelona doesn't want rotational position F1 calendar

The Formula 1 calendar is getting longer and longer, with this year's 23 races even the longest season ever. Despite the addition of the Miami Grand Prix in 2022, the calendar will not grow any further and Grand Prix's will rotate.

Although former Formula 1 boss Chase Carey wanted to grow to a calendar of 25 races, his successor Stefano Domenicali thinks that 23 races is enough. With the confirmation of the race in Miami and the wish for one or more races in Africa, this means that not all current circuits will remain fixed.

Domenicali would like to see a rotation system in the future where circuits can organise a Grand Prix every other year for example. One of the circuits that could be considered for this is the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, the location for the Spanish Grand Prix.

However, Ramon Tremosa, president of the circuit, doesn't see anything in this option. "We can't lose this continuity", he told Mundo Deportivo at the presentation of the 31st edition of the Spanish Grand Prix. "Once you are taken off the calendar, it is very difficult to return." He, therefore, wants to maintain a permanent place on the calendar.

The circuit has been struggling with financial problems for several years and last year the race was supposed to be held for the last time but was added to the calendar this year. The Spanish Grand Prix will take place on May 9th, again without spectators.
