The two-time world champion immediately signed for two seasons at the French race stable. It could wise decision according to Pat Symonds, since regulations are changing in 2022.
"One of Fernando's strong characteristics is that he can adapt very quickly and skilfully to the situation", Symonds observes in the podcast Beyond The Grid. "Whether Fernando Alonso will be the first who knows best to deal with that in 2022? I think so."
According to Symons, who recently had contact with Alonso, the Spaniard is already working on 2022. "He's already giving directions to the team. He's already told them to forget about the 2021 car and focus fully on 2022. I think he wants to get the most out of that car." Symons worked as an engineer at Renault when Alonso took the world title in 2005 and 2006. Today, Symons works for Formula One Management, where he helps decide on new regulations. Initially it was supposed to take effect sooner, but due to the coronavirus it has been postponed until 2022.
