It is regularly said that Fernando Alonso should have won more than two world titles in Formula 1. The Spaniard agrees with those who think so. On a number of occasions he came up just a few points short.

More titles were certainly possible

Alonso became world champion twice. In 2005 and 2006 with Renault. But despite a number of strong campaigns he was not able to repeat this success. In 2007 he came closest. He missed the championship by one point, as Kimi Raikkonen took it.
Alonso is asked by the Spanish Marca asked if he agrees with those who think he should have won more titles. "Well, that's true. It's true. We have been champions twice and runners-up four times and in three of the four times it was less than three points apart," says the Spaniard.

Fighting hard for the championships

"So, apart from being champions twice, I think we fought for the world championship for five or six years until the last race. and in that last race we were maybe on lap 20, 40 or 50 virtually leading the championship," the Alpine driver continued.
Alonso is proud of his world championships because they were not championships he won because of a very dominant car, circumstances or by luck. "I think we are always a strong driver and a strong team, in any circumstance," he concludes.
