As former boss of Mercedes Motorsport Norbert Haug understands the emotions within Formula 1 and the German team like no other. Haug also saw Lewis Hamilton excelling in his Mercedes last weekend and team boss Toto Wolff reacting bitterly to all the setbacks his men experienced.

Showing leadership

In conversation with the German Sky Sports Haug responds full of understanding for Wolff's taunting. "To be successful, also in top sport, well informed, reliable and factual are the most important qualities," Haug said. "But that doesn't mean that in a race weekend like Brazil, with countless dubious decisions against your team, you shouldn't even show your emotion. First and foremost, a team boss must show his team you don't have to mess with him."

However, the question is whether you should react as agitated as Wolff did. " It certainly doesn't win you any points," Haug continued. "But you gain credibility inside and outside the team, provided your arguments are credible and solid. If you only complain and always know better, then nobody will take you seriously."

Don't underestimate Lewis

Hamilton won with a new internal combustion engine in the back of his car. Many think this made the difference at Interlagos. Haug thinks the engine was just one part of a bigger picture. "The engine doesn't drive on its own. Only the combination of team, car and driver makes it successful. I would never underestimate Lewis Hamilton's role in all this. If anyone is more than capable, it's Lewis."
