Honda and Red Bull announce longer partnership from 2022 onwards

Honda will be leaving Formula 1 at the end of 2021, but on the weekend that Red Bull Racing came up with a special farewell livery for Honda, the two parties have now announced that they will continue to work together from 2022.

Honda already decided in 2020 that the engine project in Formula 1 would come to an end. The Japanese engine manufacturer wants to focus more on other projects and does not want to put the money in Formula 1 anymore. An agreement has been made with Red Bull, as they will take over the engines and develop them themselves.

However, in a press release from Honda, it is now announced that Honda and Red Bull will continue to work together. There are three points in the new partnership. Red Bull Powertrains will become the owner of the Honda engine and all information about it, but Honda will still help to develop and produce the engine in 2022 and 2023. In addition, Red Bull will take over all personnel from Honda.

The two parties will also continue to cooperate in the area of talent development. Honda will continue their Formula Dream Project, of which Yuki Tsunoda is also still a part. ''I’m glad that we have reached an agreement with Red Bull Group covering all the details of the IP rights for the F1 Power Unit and in this way, Honda can still contribute to the motor racing world. We are now working hard to strengthen HRC’s structure, so that it can ensure our fans will be able to continue to enjoy Honda’s role in all types of motorsport,'' said Koji Watanabe of Honda.
