Ziggo confirms loss of Dutch broadcasting rights for Formula 1

In a tweet from the official account of Ziggo this morning, what was already being said was confirmed: Ziggo Sport will lose its licence for broadcasting Formula 1 as of 2022.

This morning, after the rumour had been spread by Veronica Inside on Monday evening, Ziggo Sport confirmed the loss of the licence to broadcast the Formula 1 circus. This means that 2021 will be the last year that the Dutch can follow the premier class of motorsport via Ziggo. "Formula 1 will move to another broadcaster", the tweet confirms.

The tweet, from the official account of Ziggo, confirms that due to the enormous growth of Dutch interest in Formula 1, the prices rose so much that it was no longer feasible for Ziggo to keep the rights in-house. "We have proudly broadcasted Formula 1 for nine years, and in those times prices have soared to such an extent that is no longer possible for us to maintain the rights."

The subsidiary of Liberty Media, which also owns Formula 1 itself, has reportedly been outbid by the Scandinavian company Viaplay. A Turkish media station is also said to have been interested in the Dutch broadcasting rights. While it is not yet clear with what amount Viaplay finally managed to acquire the rights, estimations put this number down around 30 million euros yearly.
