After qualifying, there was some discussion about blocking each other in qualifying. Because of the tight last sector and every driver wanting to drive in free air, it is often a train in the last sector. When a driver arrives at full speed, he has to take his foot off the gas to avoid an accident. Because of this Nikita Mazepin received a grid penalty, although it doesn't change much the final starting grid.

The Haas driver will start from twentieth and last place, regardless of the grid penalty. However, the eyes will be on the front two drivers, Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen. It is expected that they will fight it out to win the Spanish Grand Prix. Behind the two rivals will be Valtteri Bottas and Charles Leclerc.

The third row is for Esteban Ocon and Carlos Sainz. Ferrari and Alpin both had strong qualifying performances in Barcelona. On the fourth row of the grid are Daniel Ricciardo and Perez. A spin on his first lap meant that for Perez, it was especially important to get a time on the boards and physical problems didn't help that. From P8 he will have to work his way to the top four.
