Mercedes and Aston Martin seem to be suffering the most from the new rules in Formula 1 this season. Aston Martin team boss Otmar Szafnauer, therefore, announced last weekend that he wants to speak with the FIA and that is something Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff can understand.

In the 2021 season, the FIA decided to reduce the downforce of the cars, thus reducing the speed. Cars with a low braking rate seem to have been hit harder than cars with a high braking rate. Szafnauer is therefore very curious about the exact motives of Formula 1 to implement the current rules.

Mercedes are also experiencing difficulties this season. Where the team of Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas were the undisputed first team in recent years, this season is a different story. Wolff, therefore, understands Szafnauer's motivations. “Because of how the rules have fallen into place last year, one can always question what the motivation was,” he told Autosport.

“I think there is always certainly the right to review and look at things and discuss them with the FIA, to find out what has actually happened, and how have things happened. That's why I respect Aston Martin's inquiry into the whole thing. Maybe things were targeted at us, and they are collateral damage," Wolff said.
