Verstappen hopes for fewer rule changes: 'The sport is still a bit searching'

Max Verstappen hopes Formula 1 can become a lot more exciting again. According to the Dutchman there are not enough overtaking opportunities because the current Formula 1 cars are too wide and it is hard to follow each other.

Cars must be smaller, narrower and lighter

If Verstappen is to improve the sport, he would focus mainly on the overtaking opportunities with the current cars. "The cars are just too wide now. That also means you can't drive very many different lines when you're behind someone else," he explained opposite The Telegraph.

A short time ago, in 2016, the cars were a lot narrower and there was also a lot more racing, according to Verstappen. Verstappen doesn't have to think long about what his favourite F1 cars were. "I really liked the cars from 2004 to 2008. My favourites were the ones from 2006 and 2007. They were a lot smaller, narrower and lighter than now. That helps a lot, because there was a lot more action on the track."

Formula 1 is still searching

The sport continues to innovate and therefore regularly introduces major rule changes. According to Verstappen, that's a problem. The Red Bull Racing driver says that if rules stay the same for long enough, teams automatically move closer together. "I think the sport is still a bit searching for that," he concluded.

Starting next season, Formula 1 will once again run with completely new cars. The 2022 regulations are set to improve the spectacle on track. The cars will be at least a bit narrower and shorter.
