The 2021 F1 season will see two over-40s at the start line. Unlike Kimi Raikkonen, however, Fernando Alonso has been away from the sport for several years. Although the test showed that he probably hasn't lost any of his base speed, Jan Lammers feels that getting the most out of the car is going to be a challenge.

According to Lammers, Alonso's competitive times in the winter test do not mean much. To Motorsport.com the former F1-driver said that you have all the time in the world to work towards a fast lap. During a race weekend Alonso will not have that luxury, he needs to be there in one go and for that ultimate qualifying lap all the details need to be right.

Is Alonso finding his edge again?

"It's about a combination of a lot of things. There are some technical things, like how do you use your tyres and how do you use your first lap, but it's also about being sharp for the one lap you have available," said Lammers, who knows how difficult it is to return to Formula 1 after a long time away.

Like Lammers, Alonso has not been idle in the meantime. He won the 24 hours of Le Mans, the WEC championship and participated in both the Indy 500 and the Dakar Rally. This makes him the most versatile driver on the grid, it's just a question of whether this will help him get to Q3.
