Lewis Hamilton is on the BBC's list to be named Sports Personality of the Year in England. The Brit won his seventh world title in Formula 1 this year and matched Michael Schumacher's legendary record.

The BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award is the main prize of the BBC Sports Personality of the Year ceremony, which takes place every year in December. The winner is the athlete who, judged by a public vote, achieved the most that year. The recipient must either be British or live and play a significant part of their sport in the UK. The winner will be chosen from a pre-defined shortlist. The most recent prizewinner is cricketer Ben Stokes, who won in 2019.

More prizes for Hamilton

Lewis Hamilton already won the award once in 2014, when he had become world champion for the second time in his career and did so in his second season for Mercedes. However, the Brit has also often finished second. He finished with the second-placed trophy in 2007, 2008, 2018 and 2019. The last driver to win the prize before Hamilton was Damon Hill in 1996.

Hamilton was the first athlete to be named as one of the nominees this morning. Hamilton was announced in a video from the BBC and with his seventh world title in his pocket, there is a good chance that Hamilton will also win this year's prizes.
