The dream scenario of most Formula 1 fans is perhaps a competition in which every team has a chance to win, and with the new budget cap the sport is getting closer and closer. However, Jean Todt doesn't see miracles happen in F1.

Which budget cap are they going to use?

As the boss of the FIA, Todt may be busier than ever right now. After 'Ferrari-gate' the top man at the FIA has a lot to explain to the teams and media and then sit around the table again during the corona crisis. However, the latter also offers opportunities, as Formula 1 can now introduce a lower budget cap.

''We're talking about cutting expenses and not aligning all teams. Suppose we set the budget cap at 150 million dollars, then the small teams will spend 150 and the large teams, including all exceptions, 300 million. That's bizarre. But you can't go much lower, because with a cap of 50 million dollars you lose a lot of teams and that doesn't fit the current structure of F1 either'', says Todt in conversation with Auto, Motor und Sport.

Options for F1

At the moment, according to Todt, two options are still open: ''We have two options: $130 million at once, or a phased trajectory in three years from $140 million, to 130 and 120. However, there are also the exceptions, because large teams make more costs, as in the case of the engine used by other teams.''

A new meeting was scheduled for Friday, but it has been rescheduled. ''Thursday we had a meeting with the big teams and Friday we would sit with everyone, but we postponed it to next week. We want to analyze the situation well before we make a decision'', concludes Todt.
