Sebastian Vettel has qualified on pole for the Japanese Grand Prix, a result which he claims he didn't expect. The German will be supported by his teammate, Charles Leclerc in P2 as Ferrari's form following the summer break continues.
Vettel now has just a few hours to get ready for the Japanese Grand Prix as qualifying took place on a Sunday for just the fifth time in Formula 1's history.
The four-time world champion battled windy conditions to secure the pole position. Vettel managed to go faster in his second run of the Q3 session as he posted a 1:27.064 around the Suzuka circuit.
"Not easy, the conditions are very different to what we had on Friday. But the main thing is the sun is out, people are happy. We are quite surprised, to be honest. We didn't expect to have the front row. So very happy. The car was unbelievable. But it's only part of the job done, so let's look forward to this afternoon," Vettel said following the session.
Ferrari have now picked up five pole positions in a row.
