Renault driver Nico Hülkenberg was happy with both his and his team's performance during qualifying in Singapore, as the German thought the French works team "achieved the maximum" under the floodlights on Saturday night.

Hülkenberg, who was once again beaten in qualifying by teammate Daniel Ricciardo, was happy that both Renaults made it into Q3 at all, as that was the team's objective heading into the weekend.

Qualifying in P9, right behind Ricciardo in P8, both RS19's were beaten by the McLaren of Carlos Sainz as the midfield battle has livened up again since Monza, where Renault got a massive P4 and P5.

“Qualifying was very intense today and we gave it everything," Hülkenberg said after qualifying.

"We probably achieved our maximum, I was happy with my laps, so we’ll take that."

Looking ahead to the race, which is known to be the most physically demanding on the calendar due to the brutal conditions in Singapore, the 31-year-old Hülkenberg knows it won't be straight-forward on Sunday.

"It’s always tough here with the close walls and frequent corners, it’s very intense but that’s why we all like racing here. It’s going to be tight and overtaking is difficult here. There’s the strategy question, safety car possibilities and I’m sure there will be plenty thrown at us.”
