Formula 1 looks to have potentially identified a different type of fuel to make the sport more ‘greener’ for the years to come in the future.

F1 already uses fuel that contains a bit of biofuel but by 2021 the authorities want to increase the amount used to at least 20 percent.

But a carbon-neutral fuel could be the replacement, which F1 also believes could be ‘greener’ than Formula E’s electric powered cars.

A team engineer was deemed to have said (quoted by GrandPrix.com): "Let's put our foot in the door now. Then the momentum will take over.

"If we do nothing, nothing will happen. Only those who start at 20 per cent will someday get to 100."

Alongside this Renault team boss Cyril Abiteboul approves of the potential change to fuel in the future.

He said: "There will be new forms of fuel coming up in the next few years, whether you are talking about more biofuel - so a different composition - or even synthetic fuel, coming from non-fossil sources."
