Sainz will ask Alonso for advice

Carlos Sainz revealed that he will ask fellow compatriot Fernando Alonso for advice along with his switch to McLaren

Sainz has moved to McLaren from Renault for the 2019 season, replacing Fernando Alonso who decided to retire from Formula 1 to race in the World Endurance Championship and Indianapolis 500.

Alonso will remain part of the McLaren family though, as he will race under McLaren Racing in the Indy500 and potentially test for the Formula 1 team in February.

Sainz was asked if speaking to Alonso was on his to-do list: “Definitely yes. I look forward to meeting him in the off-season to ask him some questions about F1 and McLaren and also to speak to him not only as a Formula 1 driver but hopefully a bit more as a friend,” (formula1.com).

The Spaniard will be partnered by rookie Lando Norris, who replaced Stoffel Vandoorne, who has been McLaren’s junior driver since 2017.

He also expressed his shock at seeing the two-time Championship winner leave the sport.

"It’s strange to suddenly have to say goodbye to such a talented driver in his prime, [But] Fernando has an advantage in that he’s one of the best drivers in the world.”

"If he changes his mind, he can always come back if he wants. The good thing for Fernando, if he wants, he can make it back. I just want him to be happy, to find a place to show his talent and have some fun.”
