Brown wants F1 to be reset to allow greater on track competition

McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown has called for the sport to be reset "as quickly as possible" by introducing a budget cap.

Formula 1 chiefs are currently in talks with the commercial rights holder to talk about potential rules and regulation arrangements for 2021. Many are calling for a budget cap being introduced.

Teams like McLaren support the idea of a budget cap but teams like Mercedes and Ferrari would have to make drastic changes to get down to the budget which is likely to be set at $150 million.

Many people want a glide path which would see the budget cap brought down gradually over a few years but Brown wants the cap to be introduced immediately to allow other teams to compete for the top spot and improve on-track competition.

"There’s FOM’s cost cap, of their revised revenue distribution. I think that’s going to be very healthy for the entire sport and ultimately put on a much better show for the fans which is what the sport is all about," Brown said to crash.net.

"I wish they would start the full budget cap immediately in 2021 as opposed to a glide path, ’21, ’22, ’23, as I think let’s get the sport to reset as quickly as possible. I’m looking forward to that.

"I think that will get not only McLaren but other teams more competitive, and I think that we’d all agree if we came to Abu Dhabi and there were eight or 10 drivers that could win as opposed to the two that we would all guess, it would be a better show for the fans and healthier for the sport, our partners, and television."
