Lewis Hamilton's season was already not going smoothly. The second free practice in Melbourne for the Australian Grand Prix was a new low. The Mercedes driver finished 18th in FP2. Only Kevin Magnussen was slower; Albon did not record a time due to his crash in FP1.

It was easy to guess what Hamilton's state of mind was: "I obviously don't feel great," the seven-time world champion told Sky Sports. "We had one of the worst sessions I've probably had for a long time. FP1 generally felt quite good. The car in FP1, run 1 felt the best it's ever felt. It just got worse and worse. Then we made some changes, some big changes to FP2."

Hamilton felt no confidence in the Mercedes

On Saturday, qualifying is on the schedule. To say that Hamilton is not in the mix for pole is an understatement. Where will he finish though? "After that session, I feel the least confident I’ve ever felt about this car. But there are positives from that FP1 run that we did."

In any case, the adjustments made to the car after FP1 will be reversed.
