It is undoubtedly a difficult day for Mick Schumacher. Ten years ago, his father and also Formula One legend Michael Schumacher was seriously injured in a skiing accident. Johnny Herbert tells Grosvenor Sport that he feels sorry for the former Haas driver.

A documentary about Schumacher Sr's career was released in 2021. At the end of this documentary, Mick says he would do anything to have another conversation with his father. "That is one of the saddest things for any sportsman and you get that opportunity, and you have a father who has been so successful, it would have been a very important part of his development at that time. But Mick never had that unfortunately. He just had that relationship up until the skiing accident. All the pressures were on Mick’s shoulders just because of the name that he had."

Mick himself has driven in Formula 1 for two years, and he has even won the Formula 2 championship in 2020. He has inherited his father's talent and passion for motorsport, but for now, Mick has yet to impress as much as his father.

'Michael Schumacher could have helped Mick with F1 career'

Herbert thinks that if Michael did still have the opportunity to help Mick, things might have turned out differently for Schumacher Jr: "Michael would have loved the opportunity to work with his son to try and put all his experiences into enabling Mock to be a very different character to what we have seen. Because he was alone in his F1 career. Michael would have been a big help and that father son relationship would have been a very beneficial thing for Mick. In other ways it would have been a wonderful experience for Michael to have that deep relationship with his son. Sadly, that was something we didn’t see."
