It has been in the air for a while, but the bullet is now said to be through; Formula 1 will race in Madrid. Spanish media, as well as journalist Joe Saward, report that it will be announced soon that there will be a Grand Prix through the streets of the Spanish capital. The first race will be held in 2026.

The Grand Prix will be finished around the IFEMA convention centre, near Barajas Airport. Meanwhile, there is a deal on a 10-year commitment with the organisers. A race in Madrid would come at the expense of the annual race in Barcelona, though. Although the Circuit de Catalunya is committed to Formula 1 until 2026, an extension of the then-expiring contract would not be an issue.

Two Grands Prix in Spain in '26?

There would be a one-off two Grands Prix in Spain in 2026. Of course, it remains to be seen whether there will be 25 Grands Prix that year or whether holding two Spanish races (for once) will come at the expense of another race. It is no secret, for example, that the 2026 Grands Prix of Belgium and the Netherlands do not have a contract with Formula 1. It has long been rumoured that F1 wants to alternate the races at Spa and Zandvoort. In that case, there would be room to run two races on Spanish soil in '26.

More clarity on the future of the Spanish Grand Prix may follow as early as this week. Confirmation would come from Madrid, in fact, it is expected.
