The Las Vegas Grand Prix was a great example of how exciting the race can be when the teams are hugely matched. In part, this was due to Pirelli's tyres: the softs barely lasted ten laps, even though they helped to get off the spot well on the slippery track. At the head of the field, the mediums allowed Charles Leclerc and his Ferrari to be the best for the first stint, while the hard tyres eventually brought victory to Max Verstappen and Red Bull.

A perfect show, then, but that is certainly not the case at every Grand Prix. To get that, Pirelli - with the help of the teams - is launching a study. It will look at which compound tyres offer the best show, according to Motorsport Aktuell. Ultimately, the results of the research should start to be used in the development of the tyres of 2025 and beyond.

Pirelli awaits intense years

In any case, Pirelli is already aware that softer compound tyres cause more variants in terms of strategy, while harder compounds make it possible for drivers to continue on their tyres for longer, allowing them to drive on the limit for longer and more often produce interesting duels between them.

Intensive years await for Pirelli, as the major rulebook change in 2026 sees the FIA and Formula 1 planning, among other things, to return to smaller tyres. Moreover, the Italian tyre supplier - which recently extended its contract with F1 until the end of 2027 - is still working on tyres that no longer require warmers.
