The 2023 Formula 1 season has been rather turbulent for AlphaTauri. After driver Nyck de Vries was sacked, Daniel Ricciardo was the Dutchman's replacement. He, in turn, was injured, making Liam Lawson the replacement now. Alongside Yuki Tsunoda, it is up to him to show his talents to the outside world, as he did not manage to secure a seat for the 2024 season.

When was Lawson told he would race the Qatar GP? "On Monday. I was having lunch and I got a call from a random number," Lawson reveals in Qatar. "It was a FaceTime, so I was really confused because people don't just randomly FaceTime, so I picked up and it was just Daniels face. He actually said he wanted to give me another weekend. Obviously good to be back, good to be in the car this weekend. It's a completely different circuit, but I'm excited," Lawson revealed.

"After Japan, it looked more and more likely that I would drive, so we just continued preparing," the New Zealander continues. "Obviously I didn't assume I would drive, but we just prepared like we would in a normal situation. It's a bit different. Obviously I want to be here full-time, but I'm just trying to make the best of it," the AlphaTauri driver concluded.

Lawson is the replacement for Ricciardo, who was injured during the Formula 1 weekend at Zandvoort. Meanwhile, the Australian revealed on Instagram that he will be back in Austin. Whether he will actually get behind the wheel is not yet known.
