Aston Martin driver Lance Stroll made a heavy impact during qualifying for the Singapore Grand Prix. He wrote his Aston Martin off at the final corner on the Marina Bay circuit, leaving his mechanics with a lot of key work to do before the race. Stroll got out unscathed and in front of Sky Sports' microphone, he looked back on his crash.

Incident with Logan Sargeant

Lance Stroll had a tough first part of qualifying. Before crashing, he first encountered Logan Sargeant. The American drove in Stroll's way, which had consequences for the Aston Martin driver. "That had a lot of consequences because then I had to abort my first lap of the first run. The tyres are really just good for one lap around here so I didn’t get the same grip level for the second lap, I had to do it on older tyres," Stroll said.

The Canadian continued: "It was weird, he [Sargeant] was pushing I think to try and get back into the pits but he was right in front of me, so I was still pushing thinking he was going to get out of the way up until like halfway through the lap and then I realised he just wasn’t getting out of the way so it really affected my session." However, the stewards did not hand out a penalty to Sargeant; the American got off with a reprimand.

Stroll: 'Tried to make up time'

About his heavy crash, Stroll says the following: "We didn’t have any temperature in the tyres throughout the whole of Q1 and then so I started a lap like two seconds behind a car in front of me, I think it was the Alpine so that we were losing a lot of downforce and also bad tyre prep and I saw we weren’t really going to make it through to Q2 in the last couple corners so I really pushed in the last corner to try and make up some time to see if something magical could happen and find some time to go through but it just didn’t stick and that was it."
