De Vries failed: 'Then they are very tough at Red Bull'

Nyck de Vries has lost his F1 seat. On the one hand, his dismissal is sudden and harsh, but on the other, it is also an action one has come to expect from the Red Bull team. Dutch IMSA driver Renger van der Zande puts it in perspective.

Indeed, according to the Chip Ganassi Cadillac driver, De Vries had no luck at all, which is apparently much needed in the sport anyway. At the Ziggo Sport Racecafé, Van der Zande says: "Look at how many [F1] cars he drove last year. He just might have gotten the chance in an Aston Martin and then you get into the top five."

De Vries at the mercy of the wolves

The driver compares de Vries to his teammate: "He just ended up in a car that didn't go this year. [Yuki] Tsunoda is really not competing this year either. You have to have a bit of luck, Tsunoda had that. If he [De Vries] had luck once then he would have scored points too."

Van der Zande does not think De Vries is a high-flyer, but also feels that the car the Dutchman got at his disposal has had a big part in his performance. Van der Zande: "It just didn't work out. Then all at once F1 is very hard and then they are also very hard at Red Bull [...] You are handed over to the wolves there though."
