Negotiations started between Hamilton and Mercedes: 'We are emailing back and forth'

Meanwhile, it is May 2023. In another seven months, Lewis Hamilton's current contract with Mercedes will expire. Again and again, media ask about the status of an extension, just as often the protagonists respond that it will all be fine. But a signature? That remains out for now.

Also during the team bosses' press conference, Wolff was once again asked about his driver's commitment. This time the answer was slightly different from previous times. Indeed, there seems to be some progress. "It's not any difficult contract negotiations.  It's just putting a different timeline and a few different numbers in there. And that's what we do."

Signing to follow

Wolff indicated that this process is currently ongoing. "And we're working on this. It's a work in progress, bouncing emails and back and forth. And eventually, we're going to sign it," said Mercedes' Austrian.

Hamilton undoubtedly wants a car that will allow him to compete for wins again. According to Wolff, that is a car with the following traits: "Yes, I think a good car is a car that the drivers are able to push and feel that it doesn't do anything unpredictable. And unfortunately, we've had that over the last year and this year, particularly in qualifying, where you really need to push the limits that the drivers couldn't find any confidence in the car."
