Lando Norris thinks it is unwise that the FIA has decided that drivers and teams must now ask for written permission to make political statements. According to the Brit, people in Formula 1 can indeed handle a certain amount of responsibility.

Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel, in particular, frequently spoke out on social issues in recent years. Whereas Norris mostly kept in the background, he believes it is very important for a driver to feel the freedom to express his opinion.

He believes drivers can handle the responsibility of thinking about their words. "I don't think any of us are silly enough to just start making up random stuff and and taking the wrong advantage of it," Norris told GPblog and others. "We only ever say things or share things because we believe it's going to help everyone."

Norris wants to keep personalities in F1

Norris understands that it is more powerful to make statements with the whole of Formula 1 to get the message across more clearly. However, the McLaren driver argued that sometimes drivers simply have a different opinion and then they should be able to express it.

"Of course it's better at times when we do things as unity. So as a grid, as drivers or as teams or as Formula one, it's always best said in those regards, but as drivers, we shouldn't be made to say things or not to say things. I think then everyone just turns into robots and you lose personalities and you lose people being different people in many regards."
