Mika Salo has admitted that recent penalties handed out during grand prix weekends has led to inconsistencies. His comments come after both Ferrari drivers were handed varied time penalties for contact with their Mercedes rivals.

Sebastian Vettel had been handed a five-second time penalty at Paul Ricard for his first lap contact with Valtteri Bottas whereas Kimi Raikkonen was handed a 10-second time penalty for his contact with Lewis Hamilton two weeks later at Silverstone.

Finnish newspaper Turn Sanomat reported that Salo would be a race steward for this weekends German Grand Prix, and he admitted that the decision making had been questionable in recent races.

"I would have given Kimi a five-second penalty too. Basically, the situations with Kimi and Sebastian were quite similar," he said.

"On the other hand, I understand a different interpretation, because after Vettel's case it was shown that in many contexts a five-second penalty was too mild," he added.
