Carlos Sainz admits that Ferrari didn't develop enough through the 2022 Formula 1 season. Ferrari launched a great car that was quick from the off but didn't capitalise on it. Charles Leclerc won two out of the first three races and looked likely to challenge Red Bull Racing throughout the season.

Instead, George Russell finished ahead of Sainz in the championship. Lewis Hamilton would've done the same thing without his late retirement. Sainz acknowledges that his team made plenty of mistakes during the season, which cost them a stronger fight against Max Verstappen

"It's been a good season for the team. You need to think of where we were coming from the last two seasons. I know we did plenty of mistakes and didn't develop as well as Mercedes and Red Bull," Sainz said in his interview with Sky Sports. "Red Bull [have] simply a solid package that works at every circuit where we were more circuit dependant. We didn't develop enough, the others have out-developed us, especially Mercedes and a bit Red Bull."

Moving forward

Over recent weeks, rumours have emerged that Mattia Binotto would be shown the exit door during the winter. Ferrari have strongly denied this publically. Sainz didn't give an answer, but spoke positively about the journey Ferrari are on.

"I know from experiance that Rome wasn't built in a day. If you see the progress we have done as a team in the last two seasons, it's huge. We are protecting each individual of the team, famous no-blame culture. We are doing a great job at that, but true we have made mistakes," Sainz added.
