Toto Wolff believes he can 'trace the issues of the 2022 Mercedes car back to a single decision made in October 2021'. The Mercedes boss saw his team racing for their first win in the 2022 season, but Lewis Hamilton couldn't defend against Max Verstappen in the closing stages.

Right from the moment when Mercedes rolled out of the garage for the first time in pre-season testing, porpoising plagued the eight-time World champions. Throughout the whole season, Mercedes attempted to fix problems which Wolff believes were caused by a decision made 12 months ago.

"I think we understand more now what it is and where we got it wrong with the car. We can trace it back to a single decision we made in October last year. We thought we can run the car on the deck... we can't," Wolff told Sky Sports

With just three races to go until the end of the season, the outcomes are starting to look certain. On Sunday in the United States, Red Bull Racing ended Mercedes' streak of eight constructors titles. But Wolff knows how this result could help Mercedes in the 2023 season.

"Credit to Red Bull they have done a mega job all year and Max is and was really strong. Winning the constructors today is what they deserve. We have a certain advantage in terms of wind tunnel time and we had a disadvantage over 1 and a half years because we on the constructors from January until the end of the year. We have 14% more wind tunnel time compared to Red Bull. That should reel them in," Wolff concluded.
