A resounding 'no' from Formula 1 and the teams fell to the Andretti family: they will not be allowed to join the field as the eleventh team (for now). Most would give up disillusioned. But Michael Andretti continues to go ahead with the preparations to form a new F1 team.

Speaking exclusively to GPblog, father Mario Andretti says many steps have already been taken behind the scenes. "There’s a lot more than we can talk about!" he says. "They (the team) want to be ready when they say ‘okay you’re on’. They want to be at least halfway there."

Not giving up

A lot of money has already been spent on the dream of having their own F1 team. Andretti is already active in IndyCar and Formula E, among others. "They are taking a big risk financially to do what they’re doing so far. A lot of people will be surprised. That’s how badly Michael wants it. He doesn’t give up. We all want it so badly. That’s what we love, it’s what we do. To have the chance with the people behind us, why not?"

A key question is going to be who will soon supply the engines for a possible Andretti F1 team. Mercedes does not appear to be it, as Mercedes boss Toto Wolff is an outspoken opponent of allowing Andretti to join. Honda is currently the engine supplier for the IndyCar cars. And, as we know, Porsche would love to make its entrance into Formula 1. But when asked if talks have already been held with these suppliers, Andretti says: “I can’t tell you that. There will be an engine. We will start in 2024 if we can."

Admires ambition

Mario Andretti, now 82 years old, has a lot of experience, being the 1978 world champion. He is also working - behind the scenes - for the Andretti F1 team. "I don’t have a specific role. If I can help in any way, give my opinion, then 100%. I am loving the ambition Michael is showing at all costs. I think it’s a wonderful thing. We have been accused of having too much passion and not knowing the business. I have news for you. We know very well the business of the sport. My life, I’ve only earned my living from motor racing. We have a passion for the business.”
