It is clear that Max Verstappen is not a fan of Drive to Survive. The reigning world champion refused to participate in the Netflix series for some time because certain facts were being twisted, but recently changed his mind after talking to the makers. Verstappen is now revealing the agreements that were made between them.

The Red Bull Racing driver has been a notable absentee from the series in recent years, and winning his first world title will be seen by Netflix as a missed opportunity. It is for this reason that the two sides have begun talks, encouraged by Formula One boss Stefano Domenicali.

Verstappen opens up about agreements with Drive to Survive

In conversation with Speedcafe.com, Verstappen goes into the details of the talks with Netflix. The Dutchman wants more say in how he is portrayed in the series, instead of giving an interview without knowing in advance in what context his statements will be used. "All I’m asking for, you know, is that it’s just more realistic, at least from my side," says the Red Bull Racing driver.

He continued: "I cannot control of course, what they do with other drivers, but at least I want to be in control with what I’m releasing. I understand they want me in it, but it needs to be more on my terms."

At the same time, Verstappen understands the importance of the series, especially for the popularity of the sport in the United States. He therefore doesn't mind playing a part in it, as long as things aren't twisted. "I’m not a big fan of being in the foreground anyway," says the championship leader.

As part of the arrangement, he is given the opportunity to see how he is portrayed and make any comments. "Sometimes, you know, you don’t even know that there is a camera around or someone is walking behind you and they can use that," says Verstappen. If footage is used that doesn't reflect the facts fairly, he feels that as a driver he should have a say in that.
