Nyck de Vries will be in action during the first free practice session for the Spanish Grand Prix this weekend. The Dutchman states to Motorsport.com that he is looking forward to the chance to showcase himself in Formula 1.

With a Formula 2 and a Formula E title under his belt, De Vries has already won a lot, but the 27-year-old driver from Friesland has not yet been given a chance in F1. In Spain, he will make his first appearance in Formula 1, now that Williams has given him the opportunity to drive during FP1. With this, Williams immediately complies with one of the two mandatory 'Young Driver Sessions' of this season.

Opportunity for De Vries

For De Vries, it is a great opportunity to show what he can do in F1, as he also says himself in conversation with the medium. ''I'm looking forward to the experience and hopefully I can show something beautiful,'' the Dutchman tells us prior to his F1 debut. Still, it will be quite a challenge for Mercedes' reserve driver. He has only driven an F1 car twice before and not at all in the current F1 cars. For him, it feels like being thrown in at the deep end.

De Vries will not have doubted this opportunity, however, because for some time now he has been associated with a seat at Williams. In 2022 he just missed out when the team from Grove chose Alexander Albon over him because of his experience in F1, but now that Nicholas Latifi is under pressure with an expiring contract, De Vries's name is mentioned again. That he sees this as an opportunity to show himself is not surprising.
