For many enthusiasts, it is an ultimate dream: to own a Formula 1 car. In principle, this is not possible. But the auction house Sotheby's in Monaco is now offering this unique opportunity.

On May 14 Sotheby's the collection of former Formula 1 champion Nigel Mansell for sale. The showpieces in the collection are the 1989 Ferrari 640 and the 1991 Williams FW 14. In addition to Formula One cars, sports cars and IndyCar used cars are also for sale.

Yet most eye-catching is undoubtedly the Williams. During the 1991 British Grand Prix, Senna ran out of fuel. Race winner Mansell picked up the Brazilian after the flag fell and took him back to the pit lane on his car. By the way, this F1 car does not drive anymore. It comes without an engine. The car is expected to fetch between 1.5 million and 3 million euros.

Two victories

The Ferrari does come with an engine. This was then a newly developed twelve-cylinder engine and the first with a semi-automatic gearbox. This car won two races in 1989, in Brazil and Hungary. Furthermore, this Ferrari was characterized mainly by the many failures. The auction house estimates that the car will fetch between 2.5 and 5 million euros.
