Lando Norris has spent his entire Formula 1 career at McLaren. The young Briton is now in his fourth season with the team and in February he extended his contract until 2025. Former Formula One driver Jenson Button was surprised by this contract extension.

Surprising choice of Norris

Button, himself a McLaren driver from 2010 to 2017, let it be known in front of the cameras of Sky Sports that he was surprised by Norris' choice to re-sign with the team for so many years. "I think Lando made a surprising choice," said the 42-year-old 2009 world champion. "We all want to be part of a team, but you never know where it will be in three years."

Button is referring to McLaren's current form since the introduction of the new regulations. During the first two Grands Prix of the season, the team barely got by. McLaren is eighth in the championship with just six points.

McLaren must find a way out soon

According to Button, Norris now faces a big challenge. He still has four years ahead of him at McLaren and it is to be hoped that the team can find a way out soon and solve the problems. At the moment, the team is already struggling to drive in the points, let alone be able to fight for podiums or even victories.

Despite the current problems, Button does think McLaren will find that way out. "This is a great team. It has won several championships and has a lot of quality people. They will develop the car in the best possible way." Last season, McLaren managed one win and four podium finishes. The team eventually finished fourth in the championship.
