Formula 1 will run with very different cars in 2022 compared to 2021. This has been done to promote overtaking, but after the first week of testing in Barcelona, George Russell and Lando Norris let it be known that they are not yet sure if the desired effect will be achieved.

During the first week of testing, several new Formula 1 cars drove together on the track for the first time. Naturally, most drivers have already tried to follow other cars to see if this actually improves the performance. Russell can confirm that this is indeed the case, but this does not necessarily solve the overtaking problem.

Following is easier, slipstream is less powerful

"The slipstream effect has been reduced quite a bit, so I don't know if overtaking is getting easier," Russell is quoted by FormulaPassion.it. The young Briton reveals that during the test he drove behind compatriot Norris for a while at about two car lengths away, but he couldn't get past them. "That worried me a little bit," he says.

Norris was present at the same press moment and agrees with Russell. Following in the corners has gotten a lot better according to the McLaren driver, while the effect of a slipstream has been reduced.
