Gasly realistic: 'They are clearly faster'

Pierre Gasly has had an excellent season. The Frenchman did a lot better than his teammate Yuki Tsunoda and thus aroused the interest of several teams. Next season, however, he still drives for AlphaTauri and is realistic about the chances. 

At the end of 2021, AlphaTauri fought alongside Alpine for the fifth spot in the constructors' championship. Although the Italian racing stable did not manage to beat its rival, the season did show that AlphaTauri can provide an excellent counterbalance to the subtop of the world championship.

Gasly, however, is trying to remain objective, he told Auto, Motor und Sport. "When I look at McLaren's performance with Lando (Norris, ed.) and Daniel (Ricciardo, ed.), their consistency and Ferrari, it's not really an objective judgment," he states. "Ferrari and McLaren are clearly faster than us. It's tight between us and Alpine. That shows the championship."

Gasly hopes for a new challenge

Whereas he still has to make do with a seat at AphaTauri in 2022, he wants to be at a different team next year. He was already hoping for a new opportunity at Red Bull Racing and he seems to be keeping that hope for 2023. If this does not work out then there is a significant chance that he will decide to look further afield.
