L'emozionante omaggio di Alonso al suo "mentore": "Un giorno molto triste".
Per vincere la Tripla Corona negli sport motoristici, devi essere il migliore nel Gran Premio di Monaco, nella 24 Ore di Le Mans e nella Indy500. Solo Graham Hill è riuscito a vincere questi tre eventi. Fernando Alonso è a quota due, mancando solo la Indy500 (ancora). Nel 2017, lo spagnolo ha guidato 27 giri all'Indianapolis Speedway prima che il suo motore Honda si guastasse.
L'ottima prestazione di Alonso nella famosa gara è stata in parte dovuta a Gil de Ferran, morto venerdì. Su X, Alonso ha quindi reso un emozionante tributo al brasiliano, che a sua volta ha vinto la Indy500 (nel 2003): "Non ho parole. È un giorno molto triste. Grazie per i momenti che abbiamo condiviso, per avermi insegnato con tutto il cuore a correre sugli ovali e per gli innumerevoli ricordi che abbiamo creato insieme. Ci mancherai Gil".
