Although most driving aids have disappeared for drivers, there is one old tool that still exists. Peter Windsor went to visit the man who was important in designing the active differential.

Aids for the drivers

A Formula One driver's wheel looks a lot more impressive today than it did years ago, but that doesn't mean that drivers have all sorts of aids at their disposal. A lot of these have been banned over the years, while teams have been able to evolve more and more. One thing, however, has remained intact.
John Sutton was instrumental in the creation of the active differential, which F1 teams still play with today. It's even more sophisticated today than it was in the 1990s. However, the technology invented then is still, even in 2022, on the cars in F1.
