Fans of both Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen are showing their worst side, according to Toto Wolff. The Mercedes team boss thinks the unsportsmanlike behaviour of both sides should stop and thinks it is high time Formula 1 starts a conversation with the fans.
The cheers heard after Hamilton's crash in qualifying in Austria prompted outrage from Sky Sports, which stated that there were only 'a few' cheering fans when Verstappen crashed heavily at Silverstone. Wolff initially said he had 'not heard or seen' the cheering in Austria, but was informed by Sky Sports.

Wolff calls for sportsmanship from both sides

The Mercedes team boss calls for more sportsmanship from both sides, even citing the boos towards Verstappen at Silverstone. "I think we just need to speak more to the fans that are cheering when the car is in the wall or booing a driver that gives an interview," Wolff said.
"It’s not what we would do with our competitors or enemies even though you can think we would have some animosity out there," the Austrian continued. He goes on to say that no one should display such behaviour and that it is now up to Formula One, together with the media, to 'educate' people a little.
