Verstappen's in-laws spill the beans: 'He's driving for Mercedes next year!'

Piquet Junior discussed Mercedes' chances in 2026 during the Pelas Pistas Podcast. He said, "There are weekends this year when things just don't work out. There's not much to do about it. One of their drivers is a rookie, who was then unfortunately hit by Hadjar last weekend. In any case, it was not the weekend for Mercedes. But who knows what next year might bring when Max is driving there!"

Piquet seemed to misspeak, as he immediately shut up after this statement. However, the podcast host immediately picked up on it. Although the 39-year-old emphasised that nothing has been contractually established yet, he did highlight that Mercedes is a logical choice.

Other options for Verstappen's future were also discussed. It was suggested he might take a sabbatical, or even prefer to race in GT3. Piquet reported that this is not the case at all. "He will race in Formula 1 in 2026. I think he will make a decision by August," stated the Brazilian.

The former F1 driver was also certain about who should join Verstappen if he moves to Mercedes. "It will be Kimi Antonelli. If he goes there, it will be Antonelli," he stated decisively.

Following Horner's departure, various rumours immediately surfaced about Mercedes and Verstappen. Moreover, Verstappen flew to his team's headquarters in Milton Keynes earlier today, where presumably another meeting is underway.

Piquet Junior, of course, has close ties with Verstappen. The Dutchman is dating his sister, Kelly Piquet, and recently became the father of daughter Lily. This morning, the world champion's girlfriend shared a photo of their daughter.
