The FIA decided early Saturday morning to suspend steward Dereck Warwick from the Canadian Grand Prix. Afterwards, British Journalist Will Buxton pointed out a key issue. Ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix, Warwick spoke to a betting site. During that,
he mentioned Max Verstappen's Spanish Grand Prix penalty, how Red Bull treats their second driver and what Verstappen could do as his future.
Warwick was noted for his 'unauthorised media comments' and thus
suspended from this race weekend. Buxton, who was working with F1TV until making the move to IndyCar, explained the catch-22 moment.
Warwick Created a 'Difficult Situation'
He responded on social media, saying, "Ex-drivers are crucial to the stewarding process. Ex-drivers will also always be asked for their opinions."
While stewards are allowed to express their opinions, a line is crossed when it comes to where they express them. Warwick is not the first steward this has happened to, as Johnny Herbert and the FIA decided to part ways over a similar situation in January 2025.
Buxton said, "It’s when they give those to betting websites, while acting as part of the officiating process, that the lines get blurred. An unfortunately sticky situation."
