Haas team principal Gunther Steiner believes the team can fight for fourth place in this year's constructors' championship.
Haas finished eighth in 2017, beating only McLaren-Honda and Sauber, but the American team saw it's cars lapping towards the top of the timesheets in practice, so Steiner has taken confidence form these performances.
Steiner was asked whether Haas could compete for fourth, and he responded: "We want to be, hopefully. We should be able to be in it, then we could be able to.
"Last year we finished eighth but we were in the hunt for sixth. It was eight points (the gap for sixth placed Renault), it isn't great but not a disaster.
"We were in there with everyone else who wanted it and maybe came up a little bit short. Some you lose, some you win."
In Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen, Haas have a driver line-up capable of scoring heavy points, with both drivers standing on the podium in F1.
Grosjean managed it 10 times with Lotus, and Magnussen just once, in Australia 2014. This is still McLaren's last podium.
Steiner continued: "We've worked hard and we made progress. Let's see in Australia what it brings us but I think it's a good target to have.
"We need to be ambitious. If you're not ambitious in this sport you never get anything done."
