Max Verstappen experienced an engine problem during the final stages of the first free practice session. The Dutchman returned to the pitlane and climbed out of the cockpit. The Red Bull driver finished the session as the fourth fastest driver, eight-tenths behind George Russell.

Worry for Verstappen in Mexico

"There's something wrong with the engine mate. I don't know...it's not behaving nice," Verstappen told Gianpiero Lambiase over the Red Bull team radio. The Dutchman also claimed that he had no power.
Verstappen managed to return to the pit lane but avoided giving the engine full throttle. He climbed out of the car, and a small amount of smoke was spotted inside the garage, but the mechanics didn't seem overly concerned about that. It is not yet known whether it is an engine just for practice or whether the engine is due to be used in qualifying and the Grand Prix.
Verstappen is due to return to the track for FP2. This will be a Pirelli test.
