Leclerc gets new engine in Russia and starts at the back of the grid

There is a good chance that Max Verstappen will have to start from the back of the grid in Sochi on Sunday due to an engine change. Should this be the case, the Dutchman will be joined by Charles Leclerc. The Monegasque will have a new engine with a new hybrid system fitted to his Ferrari, resulting in a grid penalty.

"The main goal is to gain experience for the 2022 car," Ferrari revealed in its preview on the Russian Grand Prix. "A lot of effort has been put into both technical and logistical aspects and in order to be able to use it as soon as possible, the introduction will be spread between the two drivers."

Carlos Sainz will therefore have to wait a little longer for the new engine. "This decision is a precautionary measure related to the potential risk of using the battery pack that was damaged in his accident at the Hungarian Grand Prix." When Sainz will get the updated hybrid system in his car is not yet clear. "That will be decided after evaluating the right compromise between competitiveness and the impact of the penalty."

The engine change means Leclerc will have to start at the back of the grid in Sochi on Sunday, where he may be alongside Verstappen. With the new engine, Ferrari hopes to make a big step forward for the rest of the season. The Italians are in a fierce battle with McLaren for third place in the championship. Ferrari is currently fourth with thirteen-and-a-half points behind McLaren.
