'Formula 1 teams agree to shorter practice format in 2022'

After earlier reports of practice sessions lasting an hour and a half again, De Telegraaf have now announced that in 2022 all free practices will last only one hour.

In 2021, a new format was chosen in which practice sessions last only one hour. In this way F1 hoped to have more action on the track and that happened last season. During the first and second free practice you normally saw nobody on the track for a long period of time, but that is rarely the case now.

Although this proved a success, the sporting regulations for 2022 stated that the first and second free practice sessions would again last 90 minutes. This would therefore return to the old format, but that has been changed. F1 has talked to the teams and decided that the practice sessions on Friday will also last one hour in 2022.

F1 is still struggling with another concept and that is the sprint races. Zak Brown has already told us that the top teams are trying to get a higher budget cap for the extra sprint races, while the smaller teams do not think this is necessary. For now, F1 has not yet convinced eight teams to vote for the six sprint races, so there is even a chance that there will be no sprint race at all in 2022.
