FIA decides: 'More power unit elements allowed this year'

In 2023, four instead of three of a number of specifically designated power unit elements may be used per driver in 2023. That has been decided by the FIA. It concerns the ICE, turbo, MGU-H and MGU-K, one of which will be added to the pool.

Several decisions were taken during the Formula 1 commission. Most important is the change in the setup of the sprint weekend. As a result, there are more times when the F1 cars have to perform at their peak. No doubt this fact played a role in the decision to allow more of some power unit elements to be used.

In addition to these technical matters, the teams and the FIA also decided to extend the pre-race grid procedure from 40 minutes to 50 minutes. This is counted from the moment the cars are allowed to leave the pit lane until the start of the race. The extra time is used on certain circuits to introduce the drivers to the public.

Finally, everything that falls under the budget cap changes. The FIA has decided that sustainability initiatives do not fall under the budget cap. These include, for example, covering the costs of installing sustainable infrastructure, auditing and monitoring the carbon footprint, donations to charities involved in promoting environmental sustainability projects and carbon offset programs.
