Australian GP was the toughest weekend for Masi after Charlie Whiting's death

Michael Masi, Formula 1's race director, has opened up about his experiences in Australia at the start of the 2019 F1 season. In the build-up to the race weekend, Charlie Whiting passed away. As a result, Masi was moved in suddenly to cover his role.

In 2018, Masi had occupied some of Whiting's tasks and the intention was to continue this practice for the 2019 F1 season. The death of Whiting had a major impact on the Formula 1 world. Masi describes it as the "toughest event".

"What happened in Melbourne was saddening, in many ways a sad and unfortunate coincidence. I have been asked several times lately what my toughest event of the year was. That was by far Melbourne," Masi told Motorsport.com.

The current race starter indicated that he has not yet come to rest, despite the end of the season in Abu Dhabi.

"I think I only have time to reflect when I get back to Sydney, where I visit my family during the festive season and New Year. I haven't had that opportunity yet, because for several reasons I had to continue my work all the time. I am happy with what I've done, I've done my best and learned a lot, not just from event to event, but even from hour to hour," he added.
