Antonelli recalls chaotic Belgian GP start: 'I was like, what the heck is happening?'

Starting from pole at Spa, as is often the case, does not always guarantee holding the lead through the opening lap, and what happened to Antonelli was a clear example. The Italian responded immediately, however, preventing Verstappen from ending the first lap in front before imposing his pace from the outset.

Commenting on the opening lap after the race, the championship leader admitted he was left confused by the frantic start, explaining that Verstappen suddenly swept past him before Eau Rouge, only for him to reclaim the lead moments later. Antonelli also revealed he was surprised to see Charles Leclerc almost draw alongside, saying he spent the entire run looking in his mirrors while simply trying to hold onto the lead.

Despite the chaos, he was pleased that everyone made it through the opening lap without incident: "To be fair, I was so confused about what was happening because Max came flying past me before Eau Rouge and then I passed him back.

Finally, reflecting on his battle for victory with Charles Leclerc and Ferrari that lasted until the closing laps, Antonelli admitted he had expected the Scuderia to be competitive after their strong pace throughout practice.

He explained that Ferrari held the advantage through Turns 12 and 13, where he struggled with rear grip, while Mercedes was stronger in the slower corners, making it particularly difficult to stay ahead through the middle sector.
